Lou Bondi apologises to Franco Debono
Broadcaster Lou Bondi this evening publicly apologised to Nationalist MP Franco Debono, who had criticised him over the conduct of his programme on PBS.
Writing on his blog, Mr Bondi said: "In two public instances over the last weeks, Franco Debono MP criticised PBS and Bondi+.
"With reference to these criticisms I have no difficulty in stating that the programme never had the intention of offending anyone.
"In case someone, including Franco Debono MP, might have been offended by any programme, I equally have no difficulty to apologise."
Mr Debono made his most recent criticism last Sunday at the meeting of the PN general council where, without mentioning Mr Bondi, he said that broadcasters on PBS should not criticise people unfairly. Dr Debono has also been calling for a reform aimed at making the Broadcasting Authority more effective.

With all due respect, Lou Bondi did not publicly apologise to Nationalist MP Franco Debono. In fact reading through what he wrote, it is anything but a direct apology. But let us assume that the intention was for him to be seen to be apologising, he definitely chose the wrong medium to do it. Franco Debono did not mince words when he criticised Bondi and he was very specific in stating that the culprit behind many ailments was his programme Bondi+. So logically one would have expected Bondi to apologise, if he really meant it, on TV, which is really and truly a public medium. Besides, I do not consider his blog as belonging to the public domain. This especially he has long decided (because he is also its moderator) nor to print any comments I write in response to his one-sided views. How's that for pluralism?

Isnt it obvious? Gonzi wants to keep Franco Debono quiet, hence he pulled on Lou's ear to leave him alone and make peace with him. And Lou had to swallow his pride and say yes.

He should apologise during his program not on his Blog...his criticisms occured during Bondi + then he should apologise on Bondi +

Now that elections are coming, it would be a very good idea if we, especially those in the media and politicians, are extremely careful before opening our mouths, in case we offend somebody and then one has to apologize. Better not to offend anybody in the first place. I am not referring to this specific case, but I can see it coming. After all, the vast majority are Christians, or aren't we?

MP Franco Debono is so right to criicise the state of our public broadcasting. People are swamped with PN and PL propaganda.
Ir's a veritable rat race....with radio and tv commentators outdoing everybody else to show fidelity to the party which they want to befriend.
It's such a shame that we do not have any real unbiased reportage.
How can anybody even think of criticising the P.B.S. when their bread and butter springs eternally from that source?

what apology?
"I m sorry if you re offended" is only an apology for the offense taken, and not for the words said.
An apology as reported by the Times would be somewhere on the lines of "I m sorry for my irresponsibile actions". Similar words were not said.
p.s. IMHO Lou Bondi need not apologize about anything. He s doing a great job!

Why this sudden change of heart, Mr Bondi?
(jb)
Mark Said
Nov 23rd 2011, 09:09
The sudden change of heart to my mind can only be due to an innate sense of irresponsible journalism which Mr. Bondi must be feeling. He has felt that he has exceeded the limits. Putting someone in a bad light without giving him any opportunity to exonerate himself is unbecoming of a supposed 'professional journalist'.

Lou Bondi endorsed Manuel Delia, who is the person responsable for the failed routes. When he presented a programm on PBS about public transport he should have declared these facts especially since he chose to attack Franco. Isn't that a conflict of interest on the presenter's part?

Franco Debono should - or rather must apolopgise to one and all when he stated that PBS is worse than it was in 1980s.
He should apologies also for calling Dr Carm Mifsud Bonnici to wake up - when he must have known that the Justice minister was passing through grave health problems.

I have always been thought that an apology must be made in clear words and without if's, and on the same medium that was used to offend third parties.
The media network in Malta must be controlled as it is creating undue harm to many people. Everybody knows who this ring is and it is not fair that the institutions that are being used to serve this clique continue to offer them resources and space.
Sooner or later the rules of the game will change and justice will be made.
The citizens cannot be treated like shit.

Lou Bondi should never have presented a programme on PBS about public transform reform when he had endorsed Manuel Delia, the person responsible for the failed routes, or at least he should have declared his interest especially when he chose to put blame on other people. The audience had right to know the presenter's interests.

Mr Stewart, I cannot imagine what planet you are living on. What about the BBC UK, ABC AMERICA, ABC AUSTRALIA just to name a few of the biggest. PBS Malta better still XANDIR MALTA is just a little mino in the very sense of the word, and that what makes it very vulnerable to be corrupted by who ever is in government at the time.

god forbid that happens. Do you honestly want Net and One to be the main provider of news? Unless one is an avid supporter of either the Nationalists or the Labour Party how can a 'neutral' (floating voter) hear an unbiased news item.
I watch the 7.30 One News and then a bit of the 7.45 News - ts t like living in two seperate countries!!
Hearing the former its like Malta is sinking quickly whilst hearing the latter its as if we are the best in the world!! Its a joke sometimes. Both stations have apolitical agenda and it can only get worse closer to the election.
On the other hand I would tend to agree that PBS is too much dependig on Where's everybody ? and needs to re-balance itself but I believe that it is doing a very good job and its ratings prove it.

Do I get this right?
Franco Debono, or any other public figure should never be criticized, not on PBS or anywhere else?
What, in their mind is 'fair criticism'?
I find this an intimidation of programme presenters and an attempt to shut them up and go back to the time when PBS was told whose name can be used on air and whose not.
If these people cannot stand the heat, they should get the heck out of the kitchen!
