Kevin Moore and Diane Borg have been named athletes of the year for 2011 by the Malta Amateur Athletics Association (MAAA).

Both Moore and Borg excelled at the Liechtenstein GSSE this summer, playing a crucial role in helping Malta achieve its best ever GSSE result away from our shores.

Moore won gold in the 400m in a national record time of 47.68 seconds, and a silver medal as the anchor of the 4x400m relay team which also set a national mark of 3:15.73 minutes.

Borg returned from a long lay-off to clinch two gold medals and one silver, in the process establishing three national records. In her 200m victory, she stopped the clock on 24.27seconds.

Earlier in the week during the GSSE, Borg established a new 100m record of 11.89 seconds but narrowly missed out on the gold medal. Finally, Borg was part of the 4x100m relay team that posted a new national record of 46.30 seconds.

Borg went on to represent Malta at the European Team Championships Third Division in Reykjavík, Iceland and the World Athletics Championships in Daegu, South Korea.

The MAAA has also honoured the two junior athletes who have shown most promise and dedication in 2011.

Christian Luke Chetcuti, a middle and long distance runner, distinguished himself while representing Malta at the European Team Championships Third Division and the FISEC Games in Portugal.

Nicole Gatt, the female junior athlete of the year, continued to add to her string of successes. At the GSSE, Gatt became the youngest competitor to win a medal, a bronze after placing third in the 400m in 57.07seconds.

Gatt also represented Malta at the FISEC Games where she finished second in the 300m, winning a silver medal, and at the European Kids Athletics Games in Brno, where she claimed two gold medals (300m and 4x60m relay).
