Huddersfield create history
Huddersfield made history on Saturday after breaking the Football League record for the longest unbeaten run following their 2-1 win over Notts County in League One.
Lee Clark’s side equalled the 32-year-old record of 42 games without defeat set by Brian Clough’s Nottingham Forest in 1979 when they drew with Walsall a fortnight ago, but they broke that on Saturday thanks to a brace from Jordan Rhodes.
Despite the win, Huddersfield remain five points behind leaders Charlton after Chris Powell’s men recorded a 1-0 win at London rivals Brentford.
Whelan to hand over Wigan reins
Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has revealed this could be his last season in control of the club as he considers handing over the reins to his 21-year-old grandson David.
Whelan has bankrolled Wigan’s rise from the fourth tier of English football to the Premier League since buying the club in 1995 but with his 75th birthday approaching on Thursday, the former Blackburn player is looking to the future.
“The time comes for everyone when you need to retire,” he said.
“What I would like to do is create a dynasty here at Wigan Athletic. My grandson is a bright boy and is massively keen on football. I’m inclined to let him have a go.”
AVB undecided on new signings
Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas has insisted he has yet to decide whether to spend during the January transfer window.
The Blues have made a stuttering start to the season, especially at the back, and are reportedly considering defensive reinforcements at the turn of the year. But Villas-Boas said: “It’s early doors.
“At the moment, and bearing in mind the compromises we have in the next month, it’s wrong for me to speculate on what the squad needs.”
Hansa fans riot
There were violent scenes after Hansa Rostock’s 3-1 home defeat by St Pauli as eight police officers and two fans were injured during angry clashes between police and supporters.
After Hamburg-based St Pauli, who are third in Germany’s second division, came away with a win from Rostock, who are third bottom, angry home fans clashed with police leading to 33 people being charged on Saturday night.
Around 2,000 officers were used to police the game as Hansa fans vented their frustrations as a police patrol car and three buses used to transfer St Pauli fans were pelted with stones.
The match had been halted for 10 minutes in the first half by the referee after Rostock fans set off smoke bombs and firecrackers after their team fell behind.
Knee operation for Burdisso
Nicolas Burdisso underwent a two-hour operation to repair the knee ligaments he damaged in a 2014 World Cup qualifier against Colombia in midweek.
The Argentina centre-back also broke his knee-cap in the freak accident during the 2-1 win for the Argentinians.
He must wear a knee brace for three weeks before beginning the rehabilitation process.
Post-operation tests will be needed to determine for how long he will be sidelined. Roma will be asking the Argentina federation to pay compensation for the time Burdisso will spend out of the game.
City won’t stay unbeaten – Mancini
Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini insists his Premier League leaders will not go through the entire season undefeated.
Mancini’s team are the only remaining undefeated side in the top-flight and their commanding start has prompted many observers to debate whether City can match the great Arsenal side of 2003-04 that went through the whole 38-game league campaign without a single defeat.
However, the cautious Italian manager will not entertain such talk.
“I hope we continue like this. But I think in the 26 games we have left, we will reach a time when we lose a game, I’m sure of it,” he said.
Arsenal ‘club of my life’ – Wenger
Arsene Wenger insisted he remained fully committed to Arsenal. The Frenchman, who has been in charge of the club since September 1996, created a stir in an interview on Saturday which suggested he may consider his position at the end of the season.
The 62-year-old later clarified his comments to reporters.
“It was a conversation I had with the journalist and he asked if there was any way I would leave this club,” Wenger said.
“I said the only way would be if at the end of the season I felt I hadn’t delivered what is expected from me. That is the only way I would consider it. For the rest, I am personally committed to the club... this is the club of my life and it will remain that.”
