The new Opel Zafira Tourer was launched last month in Munich with a more dynamic look, exceptional flexibility and an emphasis on comfort and safety.

At a news conference held at the Green Hill Golf Club on the outskirts of Munich, Zafira marketing manager Jerome Bailleul spoke of the new Zafira and of its “sophistication”, adding that it incorporated many flexible systems and innovative technology.

The new Zafira offers a blend of functionality and comfort that Mr Bailleul said “transports the Insignia premium values and dynamic design to this monocab segment”. The aim of this master in flexibility is to attract new users to this segment, he said.

Speaking on the design concept, Stefan Zech, manager Opel Product and Brand Communication, Europe, said the intention was to have a dynamic and elegant shape with a bold unique front end to create an iconic figure, yet keeping it recognisable as an Opel brand.

The aim behind the design is to create a vehicle that allows its passengers to travel “fast and safely in a lounge atmosphere”. The extensive use of glass also gives the impression of being outdoors while inside.

The A-pillars have been compacted and optimised to improve visibility and the car comes with a panoramic windscreen and sunroof. The overall design gives the impression of “moving forward even when the car is at a standstill”.

The new Zafira comes with a highly efficient diesel and petrol engine line-up, including 81 kw/110 bhp to 121 kw/121 bhp engines, most of which with start-stop technology.

The 2.0 CDTi common-rail turbo diesel engine is available in three versions with power outputs of 81 kw/110 bhp, 96 kw/130 bhp or 121 kw/165 bhp. The petrol engines comprise two 1.4 turbo-charged units with outputs of 88 kw/120 bhp and 103 kw/140 bhp respectively.

Manager of electrical systems Ingobert Lassrich explained the innovative and technological improvements to the car, emphasising that the systems “are there to compliment, rather than takeover, thus enhancing safety”.

Mr Lassrich made reference to the lane departure warning and front radar, which allows the car to automatically decelerate to reduce the likelihood of a collision.

Other systems on the Zafira include radar-based adaptive cruise control, advanced forward lighting system, traffic sign recognition and side blind spot alert.
