I recently joined the Ramblers Association of Malta. I enjoyed my first walk immensely; the guides were very good, and we learned that some people are exploiting the laws to build on farmland.
I am a member of the English National Trust, and have worked in the Lake District National Park in Cumbria, an area similar in size to Malta.
There are very strict planning laws to preserve the area’s heritage with almost unrestricted public access to the ancient countryside rights of way.
Malta must pass laws to preserve its unique history, heritage and character before lasting damage occurs.
The island must be declared a National Park and World Heritage Site, giving extra impetus, to place it alongside other venues.
A public and parliamentary debate is required to ensure Malta’s future as a world renowned destination for tourism and business.
