The 2011 Malta Open came to a close late Thursday at the Topaz Hotel, Buġibba.
It was the 24th edition of the Open and this time more than 200 players took part with the countries represented being Cyprus, Italy, Sweden, Finland, Scotland, Holland, Germany and Malta.
The climax of the evening was the most-awaited contest of all – the men’s final. This match pitted together Colin Rice, of Germany, and England’s Paul Harvey.
Much was expected of Rice but Harvey lived up to his tag as favourite and sealed the title with two identical 3-0 set scorelines.
The women’s singles title went to Diane Nash after beating Maggie Sutton 4-3. Nash did a double as she also figured in the winning doubles team with Carol Perkins. They beat Paula Jacklin and Helen Harvey 4-0 in the women’s final.
The men’s doubles went to Chris Aubrey and Dion Newman. They beat local pair Godfrey Abela and John Ciantar 4-0.
