Mark Pilkington will be exhibiting his latest photographic works at Christine X Art Gallery.
The latest series was made in Gozo between February and August while he was taking a sabbatical from his teaching assignment.
Mr Pilkington (b.1951) currently teaches practical and history of photography at the College of Architecture, Art and Design, American University of Sharjah in UAE. He first visited Gozo 30 years ago and now owns a farmhouse on the island.
In his work he generally plays protagonist within an otherwise uninhabited world, responding or interacting with particular surroundings, both in front and behind the camera.
The photographs have been constructed rather than being a literal description of a moment in time and place and often indicate a potential narrative, a before and after.
In this regard, and in the wide panoramic format of the work, there is a cinematic quality/reference.
The photographs are constructed and edited to create a world that refers to a particular landscape, but does not rely on it. He works relatively through intuition and brings in reason and order as the work progresses and becomes a thing in itself.
The work asks questions without providing all of the answers; it is up to the viewer to fill in the gaps in order to appreciate the work.
The exhibition runs till Tuesday.
