Finance Minister Tonio Fenech, delivering the Budget speech tonight,  announced plans for the setting up of a secondary school specialising in sports. Pupils will follow normal academic courses, but will also have more intensive training in a sports discipline. The new school will be allocated €100,000.

Mr Fenech said that €350,000 will be granted for the sports tourism scheme next year after the scheme attracted some 70,000 bed nights to Malta this year.

The government is next year also planning to open a new sports complex in Kirkop, grant €120,000 in sports scholarships, open new sports facilities in Sta Venera, and give assistance of €350,000 for the construction of a motorsports track.
