In his letter A Cold Reception In Store For Councillors (November 8), Joseph Mercieca complained about politicians and local councillors because they were not paying attention to his request for the provision of residents-only parking in the busy area close to the Galleria Shopping Complex in Fgura.
Mr Mercieca should know that on May 19, 2009, the Court of Appeal, in a case (Cit 949/04LFS) that I had instituted against the local council of Pietà, had declared that such parking provisions are preferential and discriminatory.
Responsible politicians and councillors should abide by the court’s decision and not succumb to the selfish requests of their constituents.
After all, the parking problem has been aggravated by car users who abuse public roads by occupying a car space for 365 days a year and never make use of a garage.
They are thus continuously preventing others from making temporary use of such a space. As if this abuse is not enough they expect preferential treatment too.
