The 50th meeting of the season at Marsa yesterday was made up of 11 races, all for trotters on a long distance of 3,140m.

The two events that drew most attention were those reserved for Premier Class trotters, won by Mica Bonero and Mig of the Wood.

Twelve horses ran in the first Premier race. Here, Milord Barbes (Frenċu Cassar) was the fastest horse in the early stages, opening a length’s lead from Skip Dimanche (Charlo Debono) and favourite Niky du Donjon (James Carabott).

The pace in the home straight was frenetic. Milord Barbes faltered, opening the way for Mica Bonero (David Galea) to dash strongly on the outside and finish first ahead of Troy Boshoeve (Salvu Vella).

Mica Bonero clocked an average time of 1.18.6” per kilometre.

A keen tussle, involving five horses, developed in the final metres of the other Premier race.

French newcomer, Mig of the Wood (Noel Baldacchino),hit the front some 100m from the post and stayed ahead for its first win here.

Another French debutant, Nevaio des Bordes (Brian Hili), was second, followed by Mon Daniel (James Carabott) and True Q (Shawn Portelli) in third and fourth places.

Mig of the Wood had an average time of 1.19.0” per kilometre.

Natif de Blay (Cliforty Calleja) started to slow down around 300m from the finish line of the first Gold Class race.

This horse was eventually overtaken by Knockout Molar (Charles Camilleri) which registered its first win in Malta, only a half-length ahead of Bankir Zon (Clint Vassallo). Baronello (Jason Vassallo) and Lotus du Goth (Andrew Spiteri) followed home in that order.

In the second Gold Class race, Alex Cortis put Milano du Gite in front 400m from the end to win easily from Big Hit (Charlo Debono), Neptune Carisaie (Mario Fenech) and Midoun du Home (Charles Camilleri).

Another series of races will be held at Marsa on Sunday.
