The mind boggles.
Now another one for the list.
The trees fault, the curb is too high, the camber is all wrong, should never have put a roundabout there, the bend is too sharp, the road is too steep, what a stupid place to put a lamp post, etc, etc, etc.
Now its the fault of the Government???
Need I say more? I rest my case...

It is the governments fault for a very simple reason. The is NO enforcement whatsoever. I walk to work every day, and in the 10 minutes that it takes me to get there I see AT LEAST 10 traffic infringements. People talking on mobiles, or even worst sending an sms, running red lights, speeding, etc. If there is more police presence on the road, and they are BACKED UP by the law courts, things will improve. What happens is that most of the time a policeman goes to court on his day off, with no compensation, to be ridiculed in front of the accused, as his/her word is believed, over the policeman's. So after a couple of times, the policeman will stop bothering, and wasting his time off.
Sort this out, and start enforcing the law, with EVERYONE. NO EXCEPTION

it's rather tragic how many people are badly injured or even killed in motorbike accidents...of course, motorbikes in themselves, beautiful as they are, are exceedingly dangerous... hmmm :/

Yes they are dangerous Sarah but biking is inbred in us. All activities have a degree of danger and this is no different.....so fellow riders...pls ride safe and I hope the poor chap recovers soon.

Get well soon.
@ Arthur Mortimer, be careful what you wish for Arthur. While we would all like zero accidents no other vehicle seemed to be involved so it could have been diesel over which the rider has no control (unlike a wet road)? And cars have just as much trouble with wet roads too.
Of course one could ban diesel, but I can't see the government doing that! But lets wait and see what really happened before jumping to conclusions shall we.

Arthur tourists do not consider the number of road accidents before they buy a holiday they look at Value for money and what they can do to enjoy thier stay. But yes we have had a bad weekend for accidents,

My goodness, what is happening lately. Every time I check the internet, someone is injured or run over. If I was a superstitious person, I would definitely say that our roads have been cursed.
May God give solace to the injured and their families.

very simple Ms Foster.
i imagine you HAVE gone abroad..... maybe even driven.
its the quality and design of our roads.
the main culprits,,, that is.
then there is a small percentage of driver error,,,, and anothe small percentage freak circumstances.

Honestly Mr. Mortimer, what can the government do? yes, he can mete out harsher punishments for tthe perpetrators, but at the end of the day we are responsible for our actions and believe me, we will still be reckless and careless. we are just made that way. and I am saying we, not to point fingers...I happen to be a very careful driver.

What is going on? More and more traffic accidents recently. Are there no sensible drivers/riders on Malta. Somebody get the government to take note of what is happening here. Tourists are not going to come to the Islands if they dont feel safe on these roads. Please, please get the government to listen before its too late.

Maybe the tourists will have enough sense to go by bus whilst getting around the island, rather than hiring a car.

why is it that everything is the government's fault!!!???? there will always be accidents, some unlucky ones, some because of bad drivers, and some because people are not concentrating enough.

We have been coming to Malta for almost 30 years and I have chosen not to drive on any of our visits having witnessed the very poor driving standards of many Maltese. Before our first visit to Malta I made enquiries as to what side of the road the Maltese drove on and was told by numerous people that the Maltese drive in the shade! Although choosing not to drive and instead using public transport, organised Airport pick ups and sometimes taxis we have still been subjected to some frightening "near things" due to the careless attitude of both taxi and bus drivers where the driving aspect appears to come as secondary to whatever else is happening, mobile phones, conversation with friends, radio programmes etc! The lack of care and consideration for other road users displayed by some drivers is indeed worrying.

Arthur I don't mean to speculate about this incident because its tragic. But one of the problems I suspect is that I keep seeing those motorcyclists speeding ahead (sometimes with passengers!) like there's no tomorrow when in reality they should be much more careful than car drivers. Motorcyclists have no bumpers - their body is their bumper and they are gambling with their lives.

EJJA MA NDAHHQUX NIES; as if tourists will think otherwise because malta's not safe; if anything that is one thing why they do come.

its not an increase in traffic accidents per sey, the fact of the matter is that in Malta things like this still make it into the newspaper which increases awareness to it, whereas in the majority of other countries this wouldn't even make it into the newspaper and if it did it would be in small print somewhere towards the back because other countries have higher crime rates which is a much bigger focus then the all to common car accidents, and i asure the crimes rates in whatever country you might come from is higher then locally which is a much stronger deterent to tourist then accidents
