The decision by developer Midi to scrap plans for a high-rise tower at Tigné Point was welcomed by environmental group Din l-Art Ħelwa.

“The move brings a slight reprieve to the oppressive visual environment and disturbance already caused by the massively dense developments,” it said. “It is also welcome because of the greater damage it would cause to the integrity of Valletta’s World Heritage skyline.”

The Midi consortium, which owns the multimillion euro project in Sliema, has withdrawn its planning application to amend the Tigné north master plan and instead will replace it with open landscaped space.

DLĦ pointed out that, irrespective of the reason behind the change of plans, it hoped the decision would be truly permanent.

It said that the pending applications for tower blocks should be put on hold until the long awaited policy on high rise development was published.
