Fresh fruit and vegetable supplies increased by nearly 12 per cent in the third quarter of this year and the wholesale value dropped by more than a quarter, according to official statistics.

A total of 13.6 kilos of fresh fruit and vegetables were sold through official markets between July and September, up 11.8 per cent over the same quarter in 2010.

However, the wholesale value declined by 25.5 per cent to €4.3 million.

Maltese farmers supplied 12 million kilos of fresh fruit and vegetables, yielding €3.8 million, making up 88.3 per cent of the total supply. Gozitan farmers supplied the rest.
