Michael Mizzi, the owner of The Gold Market who was the target of a hold-up a year ago, this morning denied in court that former Police Inspector David Gatt was ever involved in any investigation to recover a bag he had lost.
Mr Mizzi was called to give evidence during the compilation of evidence against Dr Gatt, who is accused of involvement in various crimes, including the failed hold-up on Mr Mizzi.
The court was told a few months ago by policeman PC99 Mario Portelli that Dr Gatt had told him that he wanted to get back at Mr Mizzi for not having rewarded him for recovering a bag containing cash, which he had lost. That was the main reason for the hold-up last year.
But Mr Mizzi said this morning that former Inspector Gatt was never involved in any such investigation. He said that some eight or 10 years ago he mistakenly left a bag containing documents and a small amount of cash on a doorstep. The woman who lived there took it to the police station and Mr Mizzi said he simply went to collect it. There was no investigation.
The case continues.
