A total of 1,234 senior citizens saved a total of €2,312,017 on their income tax returns thanks to the government’s scheme for senior citizens choosing to live in private old people’s homes. The figures for 2009 had been €2,092,053 for 1,128 senior citizens.

The information was given by Health Minister Joseph Cassar in reply to a parliamentary question by Anthony Agius Decelis (PL).

Dr Cassar said the government had substantially increased the number of hired beds in private old people’s homes. There were currently 343 senior citizens benefiting from this, with the government forking out all the expenses and the senior citizens contributing part of their pensions.

There were no plans for any change in current conditions or increases in incentives for senior citizens to seek private services.
