Bondi writes to Barroso over John Dalli
Jose' Manuel Barroso
Broadcaster Lou Bondi has written to European Commission President Jose' Manuel Barroso, saying that Commissioner John Dalli's behaviour "might not conform with his remit as an EU Commissioner."
The letter followed a complaint by Mr Dalli to the Broadcasting Authority over part of Mr Bondi's TV programme last week.
Mr Bondi told Mr Barroso that all he had done was ask a question (to PN General Secretary Paul Borg Olivier) regarding a possible political contact between Mr Dalli and Franco Debono.
Journalistically, the question was perfectly legitimate, Mr Bondi said.
Subsequently, Mr Bondi said, Mr Dalli had requested the Broadcasting Authority to take action against him.
He also claimed that Mr Dalli had made a number of slanderous, false and unjust statements about him as a journalist.
"I wish to draw your attention to the fact that Commissioner Dalli has made similar false claims about me in the media on a number of other occasions. I have denied them all in the strongest terms. All my invitations to him to substantiate them in a court of law have been turned down.
"The behaviour of Commissioner John Dalli, your commissioner, is completely and utterly unacceptable, " Mr Bondi said.
"The European Union is synonymous with free speech and the zealous protection of journalists' rights. Commissioner Dalli's illegitimate attempt to shackle me in the exercise of my profession clearly violates these fundamental principles".
Mr Bondi asked Mr Barroso to take cognizance of the matter and to take whatever actions he saw fit.

I see that Lou Bondi is not very popular. I wonder why?
I may be mistaken but is this the John Dalli who, some weeks ago, was spouting nonsense about Gaddafi and his regime because he, Dalli, has/had investments in Libya? To be fair, he was not alone. Only a few days ago, 'a-man-of-the-cloth', in an interview, also eulogised the Colonel. Only in Malta!

a simple suggestion to lou Bondi instead of going to E U why don't you make a programm and invite John Dalli and talk face to face i bet you won't take this oportunity but it would be a nice Drama or better say a love story ended with a betrial.

WHO CARES !!?? ...and more importantly, I'm quite sure Mr Barroso doesn't care, or better yet his secretary doesn't care and Lou's letter suffered the same fate as all of my letters - they go in the trash. However writing the letters makes me feel better, and I hope Lou feels a bit better too!!
Seriously, doesn't the Times have anything more newsworthy than this to cover?

Ha, ha, ha Lou Bondi thinks he is a journalistic guru who has been sent by the God Almighty to spread news, which most of it is a load of rubbish . I would be honouring you if I tell you 'mur saqqi il-hass tal-Marsa.

I do not always agree with John Dalli's statements, but to cast doubts on a fellow Maltese person who happens to occupy a high position in the EU is rather unethical. As you say Bondi, In Malta there's freedom of speech so Dalli has a right to say what he thinks just as you do.

Throughout my adulthood I have never considered myself as subject to mistakes and covered this aspect by asking to be corrected if I am wrong but wonder of wonders one can never stop learning in life, something new for me from Mr Bondi is, relax, be calm, there is no way I can be wrong and if I am challenged waste precious time of high authorities.

What I find astonishing about John Dalli is that he commented on an issue that falls under a colleague of his. What I am talking about is Air Malta. Certainly the Air Malta files falls under the jurisdiction of another Commissioner and that it is not John Dalli. Protocol and etiquette dictates that a Commissioner should refrain from commenting on files that do not fall under their direct jurisdiction.

Has Lou Bondi(n) got any shame? What has he written to Barroso? The amount of euros that the taxpayers are paying him to have his famousnot balanced BONDI+? You should be ashamed of yourself. Only the stupid watch your programme. You should go on Net and not NET2 (TVM). LOU BONDI IS JUST A POLITICAL OPPORTUNIST.

I am not a keen follower or supporter of Mr. Dalli but having watched the programme I do think that this time round Mr. Dalli is right. The way the question was made left no doubt as to what it was implying. Hiding behind journalism practices is hardly manly.

'Mr Bondi told Mr Barroso that all he had done was ask a question (to PN General Secretary Paul Borg Olivier) regarding a possible political contact between Mr Dalli and Franco Debono '
It does not appear from this write-up that Lou explained to Barroso who is Franco Debono. Who knows perhaps the name of Franco Debono has become well renowned by now through the internet.

We should be so proud to have a Maltese national in such a high ranking position with the European Commission whatever his political color - red, blue, green or purple. Let us not wash dirty linen in public and shame our fellow Maltese who ultimately carry the flag of our small but great nation. Bondi take a relaxing weekend break in hometown Gozo and invite Dalli for a fenkata to iron out any differences.

Mr Bondi and his stablemate Peppi Azzopardi think that they are Gods gift to Maltese Independent journalism. They are entitled to hold this misguided opinion. What theyre not entitled to do is use Public Television to propagate their own personal agenda. If they want to do that they should get a licence and open their own TV station. At least Net Tv and One TV wear their agenda on their sleeve and no one expects them to be either fair or balanced. The least we expect for our TV licence is transperancy on State TV
