The 2011 Elisabeth Mann Borgese Bursary of the International Ocean Institute (IOI) was recently awarded to Noel Vella to further his research on the bluntnose sixgill shark (Hexanchus Griseus).

Vella is conducting genetic analyses on specimens caught in the central Mediterranean to understand the population variation in the region.

The $5,000 (€3,624) bursary is financed through the IOI’s Women, Youth and the Sea Programme in memory of Mann Borgese, who founded the IOI as a knowledge-based international NGO devoted to the sustainability of the oceans. Malta hosts the IOI’s headquarters.

For further information about the IOI and its programmes e-mail ioihq@ioihq.org.mt or call 2134 6528 or view www.ioinst.org.
