GO undersea cable damaged - Internet service slowed

GO plc said this evening that one of its submarine cables between Malta and Sicily has been damaged and customers are experiencing a slow internet service as a result.

Technical teams are working to rectify the fault in the shortest time possible and contingency plans have been put into action to use alternative infrastructure – belonging to both GO and other providers – to minimize the impact.

GO has two submarine cables to Sicily, the first linked to Catania and a more modern one to Mazara del Vallo.

The old cable, to Catania, suffered two faults in 2008, cutting internet services to hundreds of people. The new cable was commissioned later that year.

The company apologised to its customers.

Try this one http://speedtest.net/

The GO test is local and is always fast.

GO's speed test server is located in Malta, so you basically just tested the speed to another point in Malta.

That's theory.
Practise is that internet was slower than usual yesterday.
Still... I'm online to type this, which is better than what happened in 2008.

More interestingly, I wonder why Go hasn't disclosed which cable suffered the fault.
