Immigrant jailed three months for escape
An immigrant who had escaped from Malta with the help of a fisherman this morning pleaded guilty to illegally leaving the island to go to Germany.
Idriss Ali, 19, who was born in Togo but used to live in Burkina Faso, had escaped in August 2010.
He was repatriated to Malta recently.
The man, who was jailed for three months, had, before his escape, been refused asylum status.
Inspector Edel Mary Camilleri told the court that Mr Ali had cooperated with the police and his information led them to conduct another investigation.

Three months. That should be enough for the police to do whatever is necessary to organise his return to Togo or Burkina Faso while he is in prison.

And in similar vein Malta ought to prosecute the master of the fishing vessel which brought in illegal immigrants from Libya.

The fisherman who helped him knows he acted illegally - I trust he will be prosecuted.
However prosecution in Malta is more or less useless because the fisherman will get a suspended sentence - no doubt.
