The government never accused the European Commission of delaying the restructuring of Air Malta, the Finance Ministry stressed yesterday.

It was reacting to comments by European Commissioner John Dalli on One TV’s programme Inkontri on Monday. Mr Dalli said it was unfair to blame the Commission for not yet replying to the government’s plans on Air Malta’s restructuring.

“The ministry would like to emphasise that at no stage did the government express the view that the Commission was not dealing with the Air Malta restructuring aid application in the most expeditious way possible,” the ministry said.

It said the directorate general responsible for competition issues in Brussels had been “most cooperative and most professional in all its dealings on this matter”.

The government, it added, agreed with the Commission that the process could not be a hurried one, especially when consideration had to be given to all the stakeholders affected by the process.
