Readers who travel to Scotland, particularly Glasgow, and hope to use public internet access should be aware that the Maltanet/Go websites are banned for security reasons. Glasgow City Council libraries including The Mitchell Library, Glasgow’s (and probably Scotland’s) most extensive reference library, as well as local libraries in south areas of the city run by South Lanarkshire Council have blocked the use of the above sites and banned their use.
The Mitchell Library has placed a red banner across the screen with words to the effect that there is a security issue with this site and any person using the library’s massive computer network can be banned from future use of the facility when attempting to continue to access Maltanet or Go.
A warning to this effect reads as follows:
“This site has been blocked under Glasgow City Council’s acceptable use policy” (FortisGuard web filtering – Fortinet). Other public sites carry the following warning: “This page is filtered. This site was blocked by restriction list” (RMSafetynet.Plus – RM Active Adapt Content Filter).
Glasgow City Council has jurisdiction over libraries, universities and colleges. Private internet cafés and other access points are not affected but then one has to pay for their use.
