The Occupational Health and Safety Authority is to take legal action against a worker who allegedly ignored his employer's health and safety instructions while working on the Regional Road Bridge.

Pictures of the man working on the outside edge of the bridge without a safety harness were carried in the press. The Union Ħaddiema Magħqudin yesterday called on the Occupational Health and Safety Authority to investigate the matter.

Describing such incidents as “shameful”, the UĦM’s workplace health and safety committee called for greater enforcement of existing occupational safety regulations. It was a shame, the UĦM said, that its repeated appeals for stronger enforcement were not being heeded and that workers’ lives were being put at risk. Construction sites should be free of such dangers, it added.

The Occupational Health and Safety Authority said it investigated the matter as soon as it became aware of it. It said the worker would be taken to court for refusing to cooperate with his employer on the safety measures he was supposed to take.
