St Edward’s College, Cottonera, recently held two workshops for parents to discuss ways and means to encourage children of Year 1 and kindergarten to read.

Head of Junior School Anne Tabone and Year 2 teacher Carmel Watson highlighted ways in which parents can help their children become interested and successful readers, while kindergarten head Julie Mangion stressed the importance of structured play in a child’s development.

Introducing the talks, head-master George Bowery spoke about the recent standardised reading tests administered to Year 3, 4 and 5 children in which most children scored a reading age of two to three years above their actual age.
