Local experience backed foreign studies to the effect that the microchips being used on dogs left no ill-effects when the right protocol was followed. This was why Maltese legislation restricted their application to vets.

Answering a number of parliamentary questions by Anthony Agius Decelis (PL), Resources Minister George Pullicino said there was no specific correlation between microchipping and pathological conditions in dogs, including cancer.

Mr Pullicino revealed that microchipping had just been introduced on sows.
