Baseball: Texas Rangers are one victory away from the World Series title after coming from behind to beat the error-prone St Louis Cardinals in game five at Rangers Ballpark late Monday. Texas Rangers survived another solid outing by St Louis pitching ace Chris Carpenter by getting solo homers from Adrian Beltre and Mitch Moreland before catcher Mike Napoli delivered the knockout blow with a two-run double in a 4-2 win to take a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series.

Basketball: Lithuanian legend Arvydas Sabonis was elected head of the nation’s basketball federation, just a month after suffering a heart attack. The 46-year-old will replace Vladas Garastas, his former coach at both international and club level, who has headed the federation since 2003. Sabonis was the only candidate for the post.

Athletics: Cuba’s Yarislei Silva upset world champion Fabiana Murer, of Brazil, in the women’s pole vault at the Pan American Games. Silva won with a Games record of 4.75 metres, while Murer – who had set the previous games record of 4.69 metres in Rio de Janeiro in 2007 – was second with a vault of 4.70 metres. Murer came into the continental competition as the overwhelming favourite after her victory at the World Championships in Daegu, South Korea, in August.

Tennis: The annual Hong Kong Tennis Classic, which has featured top stars such as Roger Federer and John McEnroe, has been postponed due to a lack of spon-sorship money. Organisers said they had no other option but to cancel the exhibition event, which was due to take place in January 2012, after it failed to secure a title sponsor.
