Escapism from reality - will this be the answer for the crisis hitting the retail outlets in Valletta ?

Well done to the valletta council for really trying to get valletta back on its feet, one thing though, the outlets must try harder to winn the confidence of us buyers once again . The jacket i wanted was so much cheaper out of the sale than in the sale daylight robbery now i got my jacket from hamrun

I cannot see the wow factor here, as this is normal practice abroad. In catania for example Centro Sicilia is open till 9pm even on a Sunday

WOW impressive...not....that would be normal business hours in the UK. We are so behind the times ...when are shops going to be allowed to open on Sunday!

Sunday opening should NEVER be allowed. In the UK this generates so much traffic that there isn't a single quiet day in the week. If you can't manage your shopping in the 6 other days then you have no hope of managing the basics in your life.
Take a leaf from countries such as Germany, Denmark etc which have very high qualities of life but no shopping on Sunday. In these countries, internet shopping has made much of weekend shopping redundant. The UK made a huge mistake in allowing Sunday shopping which lowered the (already low) quality of life there even further and is years behind these other countries in utilising the internet to replace bricks and mortar shopping.

I would suggest that for the forthcoming weekend, the Park and Ride will be made free of charge. Personally I think that this event will not attract much business, considering that the shops away from the commercial centre will not have any custom, as people tend to keep to the City Centre. As for the catering business, Fridays and Saturdays are always good days, with Sundays less so. As for the shops remaining open on Sunday up to 1:00p.m., this is really no new thing. Living in Valletta, I always note that business is quite brisk on Sunday mornings, but as always, parking is a problem, especially Friday/Saturday evenings, hence my suggestion that P.& R. will be made free for this weekend.

This should happen each and every weekend, and not just in Valletta!

I hope this will not become the norm to other towns and villages.
All those working in this business as employees are they going to be payed double time for their effort?

Let's hope that all tax is paid on the takings. Everyone MUST insist on VAT receipts. If the retailer refuses, walk away.

I appluaud this initiative by the Valletta Local Council.
I think I had the opportunity to reveal in the Times blog some months ago, that as Minister of Tourism I had proposed way back in l982, in a meeting I had with Joe Borg and George Agius the Presdident and Secretary General of the GWU respectively, that shops in Valletta should remain open late at night. This I argued would be helpful to the Tourism industry and will create more jobs because the shop owners would employ more sales persons.
I remember that Joe Borg and George Agius, less emphatically, came on me like a ton of bricks. They feared that the sales persons would be exploited because shop owners would force them to work longer hours without proper compensation and without giving them time to rest.
Off course my arguments that that our laws should be enough to protect these workers were completely sidelined.
Off course this was never made public. The GWU at that time was part of the Cabinet.

NO SALE NO GAIN MATES.....You need to give consumers an initiative to go shop in Valletta...not just open shops but rather lower prices for that particular weekend....

It is a good idea to keep the City busy with shoppers. Shops must be open every Sundays till 1.00 afternoons for the tourist and local people. Most of the Maltese work long hours during the week and the only chance to go shopping on Sundays. Let us keep our City ALIVE.
