Between October 2010, when the St Francis Animal Welfare Centre at Ta’ Qali was inaugurated, and the end of September this year the animal ambulance operated by the government’s Animal Welfare Department took 642 stray or injured dogs to the centre.

Answering a parliamentary question by Anthony Agius Decelis (PL), Resources Minister George Pullicino said 479 of the dogs had been given the medical assistance they needed, while 163 had to be put to sleep.

The total cost had run to just over €19,157.
