Woman hurt, bus windscreen shattered

A bendy bus had its rear windscreen shattered in a minor collision with another bus in Naxxar Road, Birkirkara, this morning.

An eyewitness said the bendy bus was in the bus-bay when it was hit by another bus and the woman inside the second bus was hurt. She was taken to hospital in an ambulance.

I have to pick up my daughter up from my mother in law's house in sliema and i pass through mrabat street. And believe me, its sheer torture trying to pass when these stupid buses are constantly getting stuck for one reason or another. Mrabat street is bad enough without these buses and I think that the authorities really should find an alternate route for these buses to pass from and not mrabat. it is simply just too narrow. and every ten minutes an arriva bus passes through so imagine the mayhem! I am caught up in it constantly.

Simple rule of te road for you Mr Hili: the truck is bigger than you and is carrying more people than your car, let it past man! It is not about who is king of the road or who wins, they are doing a public service, are you?Stop your drama and have some of the road respect that we are all to lacking in this country.

@ Ray Cassar:

You are in saying "Let them pass" bit not because they are giving a service and I am not... it's because they are carry an unsecured load that can be thrown about and get injured if you make them brake sharply.

@ Ray Cassar
What you say sounds like fear, not respect.
i.e. Fear of being hit because it's bigger and carrying a heavier payload.
Fear is healthy of course, because it keeps you out of trouble, but you should not minimize the issue.

I went to speak to someone in person about my concerne for passengers safety if such a situation happened. I was told that they comply with HEALTH and SAFETY regulations because passengers are supposed to be holding onto one of the drop down hand rails, or one of the upright post's, so if anyone got hurt in such a situation it would be the passengers own fault for NOT keeping hold of the safety device fitted. The only problem would be if half of the passengers were children and couldn't reach the hand rails provided. I'd like to know how ARRIVA would get out of that.

@George Reeves

I agree with you entirely. It is not always possible for someone to hold on for long. I have a problem holding my arms up for more than a few seconds at a time as the blood runs out of them and they get painful. I have to change hands constantly when standing on a bus (usually I am carrying shopping with the other hand) and the driver breaks, always at the moment I have to let go. So many times I have fallen on a passenger. It's embarrassing to say the least and definately dangerous. I hasten to add that this was a problem on the old buses too. It's not new for me. I also hate to see small children standing, I always offer either my lap or my seat for them. Apart from the danger of them falling, They get their poor little faces crushed up against someon't bum. It's cruel

You must have a keen sense of smell ! No one wants to put Arriva in a bad light. We only want a decent bus service. Doesnt have to be 'a state of the art', just decent enough so people can feel comfortable with it.
We will see if 5/11 things get better or if its just another merry-go-round.

A smash ttruck window is hardly a fatality or a disaster Dr Bezzina! Are you be dramatic? Do you know what disaster means? It looks not! Maybe if you say it 1000 times someone will get hurt then you can stand beat your chest and cry I told you so. I was right! But would that real make you more of a man? Why use your voice to stir people up crazy and angry when the most of the people I now talk to on the truck are ok with the journey. Those who not seem to be unhappy about route, or the late because of the crazy traffic we own cause by the 310,000 cars on our roads!!

I ave said this before, you have a brain so please use it, stop the drama, stop the constant complain and put your energy and voice to where it really count. The issue does is has been the routes. Minister Gatt has finaly taken the responsibility for this and is working to fix it. It is about time but give him a chance to do what he said. If you like to shout about the roads try shout to transport malta who need to fix the congestion problem, but who again cannot do that without our help and getting rid of the lots of the 310 thousand cars we have!!!

Maybe in the meantime your drama and shouting could be better use to help fix the big elephant in the room that we are finaally start talking about, the economy and the terrible situation in Europe that may befall our island like Greece and Portugal if we do not start looking at the big danger and doing something about it!

Can you not read properly? The bendy bus was in the bus bay. IT was the other bus that hit it. Therefore the fact it was a bendy bus is irrelevant.

Someone else commenting above is suspecting foul play. With the amount of incidents, between these buses it seems they could be right.

After all, the 'old school' drivers couldn't stop the service by not turning up for work, maybe they are trying to do a bit of industrial sabotage.

All I can see is a much improved service from what we had with faults that are being ironed out day by day, a much cleaner environment and a few people moaning because the service isn't run entirely by maltese people.

(DANIEL JONES BA(HONS), BRONZE SWIMMING CERTIFICATE, SILVER SWIMMING CERTIFICATE).
Perhaps yours was a dig at the original contributor: I hope you are not suggesting we start swimming to arrive at our respective destinations!

Well, taking to the sea is not such a bad idea after all!
Perhaps some entity would come up with a feasible sea-ferry service....consider Cottonera to Valletta. And with the Upper Barrakka Lift in operation, that would take a big slice of traffic off our roads.
Does Arriva Malta Ltd have any seaworthy buses .... well to begin with their corporate colour is Aquamarine...that’s a start, isn’t it! (god forbid).

They were also tested in The Isle of Man (which has a lot less narrow roads and generally better road surfaces compared to Malta) but they were deemed a danger to other traffic, and completely unsuitable. The trial ended and the option to use them was not taken up...

...a year later they turn up in Malta.

" ... the one and only major problem still remains in the Public Transport system: the drivers."

Have you quite forgotten the REAL major problems - the routes and time-tables ?

And could you kindly refrain from making sweeping statements such as "we Maltese are irresponsible and undisciplined"? They only serve to label you as one of the unfortunates who suffer from the delusion that foreigners are autiomatically superior beings.

Anthony Borg

Oct 25th 2011, 21:02

@ Mr.Louis Saliba
Hardly sweeping statements: you only need to get on our roads and get personal experiences!

I have been on Arriva buses driven by English drivers and you can immediately sense the difference. Even the braking is progressive and not harsh as is common with our local drivers. We tend to tailgate too much, hence the constant, gut-wrenching braking.

Maybe for you “the REAL major problems – are the routes and time-tables”.
Yes, that too, but these are being addressed and hopefully will be bettered.

But as for the local drivers...I stand by my sweeping assertion.
“Foreigners are NOT superior beings” – they are better disciplined in their line of work.

In Favour of Arriva? Why?

Jon Vercellono

Oct 25th 2011, 12:43

In Sliema, they constantly overtake - but I personally think that the buses would not try to do so if the drivers behind would be patient whilst people alight. Its ridiculous that no one can stop for 1 minute, or press the accelerator immediately as the light turns green without some (obviously important) impatient person honking the horn. This situation looks as though it is not the fault of the buses but quite the opposite, the result of years of turning a blind eye to the abusive practices of private car owners. Arriva drivers should start taking license numbers.
