We are all aware of the services the Church provides to the sick, the elderly, needy children and families, not to mention the money it pays to the clergy and the wages it pays to its lay employees. Churches too incur running expenses to maintain the premises and they too have to pay for all other services.

It seems that although Malta adopted the euro four years ago, in church collections many keep the old currency denomination in mind and think that the cents previously used have the same value as euro cents. Very rarely do you see a paper note, not as requested in party collections, where no coins are mentioned either on TV or during party meetings. No wonder the Church registered a deficit last year.

Isn’t it time we reflect before we dig into our pockets to support the Church financially? Children would look at you very sternly if you were to give them a small coin to buy sweets, as it will not get very far. We should donate some paper currency during Sunday Mass, and at least one or two euro coins during daily Mass.
