Before setting off on tour in London earlier in summer, Maltese rock band Red Electrick signed a new digital agreement with Los Angeles-based distributor BFM Digital. The deal means the band’s debut album Vine Lady is now available for sale on a number of leading international digital stores, among them Amazon, Spotify and iTunes.

At the time the deal was signed however, iTunes wasn’t yet available in Malta, although this didn’t stop BFM organising a front-page new artist profile for Red Electrick on its UK shopfront. Acknowledging it was an odd situation that Maltese people couldn’t buy songs by Maltese bands (or any artist really) via iTunes, BFM Digital looked more closely into the matter and got in touch with iTunes to assess the issue and review Malta’s viability as a new market.

When Red Electrick returned from London, beaming from a string of successful dates in the British capital, they had even more reason to smile about when they found out that the iTunes store was finally available in Malta too.

Red Electrick guitarist Peter Borg said: “Malta seemed to have been ignored by the music world, and it was when we went to London that we realised the full extent of this travesty, not only for us as a band but for the music world as a whole.

“The Maltese are some of the biggest music lovers around and to not have access to any music via iTunes was a shame.”
