‘Silence, Sounds and Spaces’ is the title of Renzo Spiteri’s new solo work that will be released as an audio CD during live performances in the Theatre in the Round at St James Cavalier Centre for Creativity, Valletta, on November 11 and 12.

The unique archaeological sites inspired me to record the music

The album defines Renzo’s creative journey across a selection of the most prominent archaeological sites spread across the Maltese Islands, encompassing music inspired by these sites and exploiting some of their unique natural sonic timbre.

This project is the follow-up to the scoring of the music to the visitors’ audio guide of the Ħal-Saflieni Hypogeum (a Unesco World Heritage site) for which Renzo was commissioned by Heritage Malta (the national agency for museums, conservation practice and cultural heritage) in 2007.

The music for the audio guide was recorded on location at the Hypogeum during a three-week period working and experimenting in specific areas of this magnificent site.

“The unique archaeological sites, the known and the unknown, chambers and spaces that vibrate and resonate so splendidly – these were all factors that inspired me to record music for ‘Silence, Sounds and Spaces’.”

Spiteri is a creative musician renowned for speaking multiple languages with his hands. He collaborates on a stunning number of projects that undertake to bring together a wide range of musicians, as well as solo projects where there is a spirit of enquiry, seeking to discover how variant rhythms and sounds work together.

His artistic sensitivity, intrinsic musicality, stylistic breadth and penchant for non-traditional approaches to composition provide the perfect ingredients in creating a solid technique and vocabulary allowing for the creation of innovative multimedia performance work.

The music of ‘Silence, Sounds and Spaces’ has been composed, performed and produced by Spiteri using the most diverse set-up of instruments from around the world and invented instrumentation.

The result is an engaging music creation that draws listeners in to Renzo’s personal musical universe.

Featuring unique on-site recordings and through the use of his extraordinary world of sounds, Spiteri conjures powerful images of these stunning historic sites where time stands still.
