Public transport contractor Arriva has already converted some 20 of the King Long buses “inherited” from the ATP system, all of which are less than eight years old and up to Euro V standard.
Transport Minister Austin Gatt told Joe Mizzi (PL) between 20 and 30 other buses are at the conversion stage.
Approximately 40 out of 540 of the old buses had been held on to by owners, with some being used as tourist buses, and all others except the 80 retained by Heritage Malta will be scrapped.
Interestingly, Dr Gatt said that some of what were referred to the “Malta” buses had actually been imported from the UK and Rhodesia and converted for public transport use in Malta. Only three of the buses retained by Heritage Malta were “true vintage”.
