A penalty goal five minutes from time gave Siġġiewi three valuable points in their match against lowly Senglea who are still bottom of the table with no points from four matches.

The first half saw little action at both ends of the pitch. Indeed, both sides struggled to carve openings and pose a threat to either goalkeeper. Siġġiewi protested for a penalty on 18 minutes when Ciappara appeared to catch Farrugia’s foot, with the referee allowing play to continue.

On the half-hour mark, Senglea’s goalkeeper George Attard appeared to have grabbed the ball outside his box. This time, referee Luke Portelli opted for a booking to the keeper after awarding Siġġiewi a free-kick. From the set-piece, Jason Camilleri’s drive sailed over the bar.

In the last action of note before the break, Emeka made a good run inside the Siġġiewi half but his low shot was turned into a corner by Vella.

Five minutes into the second half, Siġġiewi’s Cutajar tried to surprise Attard with a chip from the distance but the Senglea veteran was on the right spot to avert the danger.

The match came to life in the last 15 minutes as Siġġiewi were continuously on the attack.

A powerful Camilleri shot from outside the box hit the Senglea bar but on 85 minutes Siġġiewi finally found a way through.

Camilleri, so active in attack for his team, beat goalkeeper Attard on the run before shooting towards an unguarded net. The ball, however, was stopped by John Alegbe’s outstretched hand and a penalty was given.

Alegbe was sent off and from the spot, Camilleri left Attard stranded for the match winner.
