A young man who went through a period of “misadventure” but seemed to have finally got himself on the straight and narrow yesterday denied a string of thefts and committing a crime while on a suspended jail term.

Simon Borg, 26, of Żurrieq, denied stealing stereo equipment and other items from cars on seven occasions between 2005 and two months ago.

He also denied relapsing, breaching the conditions of a previous release and committing one of the crimes while on a suspended jail term.

In requesting bail, lawyer Franco Debono said his client was trusted by the police when they granted him bail during investigation. Furthermore, he had just come out of a period of misadventure and was now settling down.

Rebutting, Police Inspector Michael Mallia said police bail was an extension of the arrest and that it was his duty to obey police orders.

Magistrate Francesco Depasquale granted him bail against a personal guarantee of €5,000 and a deposit of €500.
