Caterer jailed for dealing in cannabis
A freelance caterer was yesterday jailed for nine months after he admitted to being in possession of 10 sachets containing cannabis near the Plaza shopping complex on Sunday.
In giving his particulars, Kenneth Zammit, 30, of Ta’ Xbiex told the court that he used to be a full-time chef but now worked doing freelance catering where he cooked for groups of around 15 people.
During his arraignment yesterday, he admitted to trafficking in cannabis and being in possession of the drug in circumstances which denote it was not for his exclusive use.
He also admitted to committing the crimes within 100 metres of a place frequented by minors and stealing a skate boarding helmet from the shop Free Soul in Sliema.
During submissions on punishment, his lawyers Clifton Grima and Adrian Borg said their client had a clean police record, had cooperated with the police and wanted to kick his drug habit once and for all.
Police Inspectors Jesmond Borg and Jason Sultana said that by law he had to be jailed and that is what they were pushing for.
Magistrate Francesco Depasquale told Mr Zammit that his hands were tied by the law when it came to jailing him and that he had full faith that he would manage to overcome his drug problem, wishing him well for the future.

Abolish minimum sentences.
I remember a case, a couple of years ago that a young woman was caught with 1 ecstasy pill. However, she confessed she had bought 6, two for herself and two for each of her two friends. She also stated that when they party, it's what they do. One buys the whole lot for the three girls to spend the night.
Logic says that she is playing with fire, dabbling with drugs, definitely. However the law says that she is a trafficker! Because, strictly speaking she is. She did hand out the pills to her friends.
Because of minimum sentences, the judge who used exactly these same words - my hands are tied - had to give her a prison sentence.
I don't know the girl, but honestly hope she didn't come out of prison a hardened criminal and moved on with ther life.

Looks to me that his human rights have been walked all over.
Maltese People - Cannabis is not heroin
Cannabis is less harmful than a cisk lager
Maltese Government grow a pair and change the law
You will not burn in hell as their is no such place
Cannabis is talked about in the Bible in a good way

I'm assuming that these sachets might have contained 1 gram each if this individual was intending on selling.
Nice European Union I've voted for! It seems to me that this is a European Union of convenience where some are more equal than others. I find it outrageous that this man got 9 months in prison for 10grams of weed while in other European states he wouldn't get more than a fine. Now he goes in jail as a freelance chef who enjoys a joint every evening and he will come out possibly as a heroin addict and without any possibility of a decent job due to his police-conduct. All of you Parliamentarians, you policy makers, you who decide the laws of the country, you and only you are being the ruin of many innocent lives who prefer to consume a herb rather than your taxed alcohol. The greatest harm associated with cannabis is prison.
Justice should be equal for everyone, but it seems that from one European state to the other justice is a whole different thing.
