Alex Ciantar (The Sunday Times, October 2) took Marsascala council to task because a year ago. after he had protested at the ugly state of the playing field, I wrote in the paper to assure him and the residents that his complaints had not only been noted but that the council would undertake to modernise the playing field, remodel it to meet EU safety regulations and introduce new equipment.
Mr Ciantar complained that a year has passed and nothing happened. He even went so far as to accuse the mayor and council that they had had a long sleep and done nothing.
I would like to inform Mr Ciantar that the council has not been sleeping at all. What we promised a year ago is going to yield fruit very shortly.
Mr Ciantar should know that we just cannot start the project without first getting all the necessary permits from the competent authorities and then, we have to tender the works to be undertaken, study the designs, calculate the expenses and then opt for the final solution. Now all these preliminaries have been concluded, and the tenders were awarded last Monday.
I do hope that when the new playing field is inaugurated Mr Ciantar will be there and at least he would come forward and apologise to me and my council.
