Veteran diplomat Victor Camilleri will be Malta’s new Ambassador to Libya, The Times has learnt.

Mr Camilleri, Malta’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, is expected to present his credentials to the Libyan provisional government in Tripoli in the coming days. He will be based in the Libyan capital, Tripoli.

A spokesman for the Foreign Ministry confirmed the appointment.

Mr Camilleri replaces George Cassar, who left Libya soon after the conflict started. Mr Camilleri’s diplomatic career spans over four decades. As Malta’s ambassador in Brussels he formed part of the negotiating team before the country’s accession to the EU.

He headed former Foreign Minister Guido de Marco’s Cabinet during his presidency of the UN General Assembly.
