A total of 270 degree students yesterday received government scholarships worth some €2.5 million.

So far, 1,364 students have received government scholarships worth around €12 million since the schemes opened in 2006, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said in a ceremony.

Education Minister Dolores Cristina pointed out that a record number of students took up courses at the university and at the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology this year.

There were also a record number of applications from students wishing to read for a Master’s or doctorate.

The criteria for the schemes were widened to allow people of all ages and to continue working while studying.
