Darren Giordmaina has Rabat and volleyball at heart, so it was no surprise that earlier this year he embarked on an ambitious project of establishing a team from his town to play in the MVA league.

Giordmaina has been involved in the game since 1989 and had spells as a coach with other clubs.

The process of etablishing a team in Rabat was no easy job but with the help of Phyllis Micallef, Kelly Gauci and Brigitte Cauchi, Giordmaina succeeded in assemb-ling a women’s team that has already secured the backing of Tatara Bathrooms and Punch & Judy Club for the new campaign.

The club already boasts 19 players on its list and the technical staff is also forming up nicely with Alexandra Meier assistant coach and Malcolm Bartolo responsible for the team’s fitness.

And the commitment of all those involved is reaping the desired rewards. The squad recently organised a fund-raising activity which was well-attended and the res-ponse was encouraging.

At present, Giordmaina is training the squad twice weekly.

This season, Rabat will participate in the women’s second division championship.
