The Malta Boxing Commission is still in its infancy after being recognised as the country’s official sanctioning organisation for the sport only four months ago.
The determination to establish pro boxing on our shores is clearly evident though and on Monday Commission president Alexander Zammit unveiled the first ever Malta National Championship belt.
The centerpiece of the new belt, which is crafted from solid bronze, features the red and white colours of the Maltese flag and a falcon.
MBC-licensed and ex-pat Maltese boxers overseas are eligible to contest the National Champion-ships, open for all weight classes, as from next January.
On unveiling the new belt, Zammit said: “It’s truly exciting times for professional boxing here.
“It is exactly four months to the day since we, the Malta Boxing Commission, became affiliated with the European Boxing Union, yet here we are unveiling the first Malta National Professional Boxing Championship belt.”
Currently the Commission is aware of eight boxers that can compete for the titles.
“Hopefully there will not only be more boxers applying for their licence with the MBC, but also other Maltese boxers living abroad who will show interest in competing for the championship in their homeland,” Zammit said.
“We are totally committed to this new championship and eagerly look forward to the first title fight, which hopefully will take place some time next year.”
