Up to the end of July this year there were 578 appeals pending before the Criminal Court of Appeal from decisions handed down by the Magistrates’ Courts in Malta and Gozo.

At the same time there were also 37 pending appeals before the Criminal Appeals Court from sentences handed down by the Criminal Court.

Justice Minister Carm Mifsud Bonnici gave the information in reply to a parliamentary question by Labour MP Josè Herrera.

Answering another PQ by Dr Herrera, Dr Mifsud Bonnici said that in 2010 the Criminal Court of Appeal had decided 14 appeals from sentences handed down by the Criminal Court, and 11 up to the end of July this year.
