I do not understand what Karl Consiglio (October 10) finds “absolutely funny (in our public schools) how religion, which is based on faith, is taught every day while science, which is based on fact, is taught just once every so often”. I fully agree that science teaching deserves better treatment than what it is receiving today but one should not detract from the importance of religion. Religion, particularly the Christian version, teaches a way of living that respects others, preaches tolerance, forgiveness and solidarity, all virtues that, when practised, lead to peace and serenity between individuals and countries.
After the recent riots in London, Prime Minister David Cameron admitted that in England, where the teaching of religion had been sidelined for years, morality was in total collapse, a situation that had led the previous Prime Minister to express the need “to go back to basics”.
One hopes Malta will not tread the same path.
