I refer to the letter Menacing, One-Metre-Deep Manhole (October 6). The hole was most probably caused by some heavy vehicle and is the responsibility of Go, not Enemalta. The local council immediately contacted those responsible to cover it up properly.

Go took immediate steps. First it marked the broken stone slab with a green cross to warn passers-by and then two days later they placed new stone slabs and covered the hole. This proves that the council took all precautions necessary to avoid ugly incidents. Fortunately none occurred.

I believe in continuous dialogue with the residents and this practice has always been the cornerstone of my mayorship, so letters and correspondence criticising me if I fail to do something are always welcome because it means that I have eyes and ears in every nook and cranny of the locality to inform me what is going wrong or what needs to be done. Every morning I receive phone calls and SMSes informing me of things going wrong. This is what I call genuine and positive criticism and complaints.

However, Albert Bugeja and the other online commentators have opted for negative pointed attacks against me and the council. They showed that what concerns them is not the manhole but their bogeyman, that is, the mayor. I really pity the poor people. They should take to heart the Bard’s warning that hate is “a green-eyed monster that do eat a person alive”.
