• The Armed Forces of Malta will be holding an ‘Open Ship’ day today at Mġarr Harbour. Patrol boats will be at the harbour between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

• Big Mommas Like Father Like Son will be screened at the Don Bosco Oratory, Victoria, today at 5.30 p.m.

• St Gregory Band Club of Kerċem will be organising Festubru today at Lunzjata Valley. The Lunzjata chapel will be open for the day.

• Xagħra council will be holding a fig festival today. An exhibition of fig products will be held at Victory Square between 8.30 a.m. and1 p.m.

• Tosca will be presented at the Aurora Theatre in Victoria on Saturday at 7.30 p.m., under the patronage of President George Abela.

A free shuttle service will be available from Mġarr to Victoria and back. Patrons are asked to book their seats by e-mailing info@leone.org.mt or by calling 2155 9452 (mornings only).

• Xagħra council is holding a competition for residents to promote the best environmental initiative as part of the European Week for Waste Reduction taking place in November.

Residents are being asked to submit their proposals in a sealed envelope to the secretary, Xagħra council, 8th September Avenue, Xaghra. Entries must be sent by October 28. A prize will be awarded for best entry.

• A musical event entitled‘Gloria-making music festival’ will be held at San Lawrenz parish church on Thursdayat 7.30 p.m.

The Chorus Urbanus, under the direction of John Galea, and the North West Festival Choir of the UK will take part. Entrance is free. The festival is also taking place in Malta until October 14.

• The diocesan Eucharistic Movement will hold a prayer evening at Munxar parish church on Saturday at 8 p.m., followed by Mass atmidnight.

• The Bethel Charismatic Group is holding a prayer meeting at the church of Our Lady of Pompeii, Victoria, on Saturday at 7 p.m.

• A Systems of Knowledge course will be held at the University of Malta – Gozo campus for 25 Fridays, starting on Friday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Those interested are to fill in a registration form which can be collected from the campus, Mġarr Road, Xewkija, tel: 2156 4559, 2156 2054, or by fax: 2156 4550 by Thursday.

If the course is oversubscribed, places will be assigned on a first-paid-first-registered basis.

• The Victoria Scout Group will be holding a lunch under a marquee at Dwejra next Sunday at12.30 p.m. Tickets at €12 for adults and €5 for children (up to 12 years) are available from the scouts’ headquarters on 2155 6497 or Lorrie Saliba on 7939 8928 until Wednesday. In case of bad weather, the lunch will be held at the scouts’ headquarters.
