EU approves Microsoft acquisition of Skype

The European Commission has approved Microsoft Corporation's proposed 8.5 billion dollar  acquisition of the internet voice and video communication provider Skype, saying the deal would not significantly impede competition in Europe.

The approval, announced today, appears to be the final step in the technology giant's effort to acquire Skype.

Brad Smith, general counsel and executive vice president of Microsoft, said in an emailed statement that the company is pleased with the decision.

Mr Smith said it was "an important milestone" because the company has "now received clearance from both the United States and the European Union".

Only Skype-to-Skype calls are free, the rest you have to pay for.

And what has Microsoft buying Skype got to do with asking for money? As far as I know Live Messenger (which is almost the equivalent of Skype) is still free to use!

Not necessarily, income is generated from adverts and the telephony charges.
