Misurata council chairman Khalifa Alzawawi thanked Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi for Malta’s “continuous support” and help in treating injured Libyans.

In a letter to Dr Gonzi, Mr Alzawawi also said the people of the city of Misurata “very much appreciate the important and historical role Malta continues to play in this crucial period to achieve our goals in gaining our freedom”.

Just last week, six injured Libyans were flown to Malta for treatment. The patients included a three-year-old boy suffering a brain injury who is in a critical condition.

Malta has in recent weeks upped its drive to provide humanitarian aid but space in hospital has now become a problem. A group of critically injured fighters could not be accepted last week because the intensive care unit at Mater Dei Hospital was full. They were instead sent to Greece.
