The Valletta local council said it had identified spaces for motorbikes that have been stopped from parking on pavements and was in the process of consulting the relative authorities about them.

For the last eight years, bike owners who work in Valletta were parking on pavements near the Stock Exchange and the Central Bank close to Castille Place. But without warning, they started to be fined, they complained.

They maintained the pavements were wide enough to avoid any inconvenience to the public and said the police had never stopped them.

Besides, they saved about five car spaces by parking where they did. At the moment, they seem to be squeezing into one parking space to avoid occupying the already limited areas available.

Valletta mayor Alexiei Dingli pointed out that legally, motorcycles were not allowed to park on pavements.
