Birgufest

The festival of culture and history

Birgufest is upon us this weekend as Vittoriosa relives its colourful and historic past between today and Sunday.

The festival will feature a wide variety of cultural events such as theatre, musical concerts, dance, family entertainment, and food and drink.

Vittoriosa is one of the most historic and oldest cities in Malta. The festival originated as a way to celebrate the beauty and history in a romantic way, by candlelight.

The ancient streets of the wonderful city are gently lit up by the flickering light of thousands of candles.

Birgufest is now celebrated on a much larger scale with a wider variety of events and activities. These also include re-enactments of historic events, discounted entrances to museums with extended hours, and the public opening of several other historic and interesting venues such as St Lawrence church, the Maritime Museum and the Inquisitor’s Palace.

Some of the other highlights at Birgufest include the eclectic range of musical concerts, from classical to modern as well a variety of exhibitions and the local Maltese and international delicacies that are available from the numerous food stalls.
