A Polish couple who seemed blissfully unaware of the stiff jail term attached to drug smuggling yesterday hugged and kissed during their arraignment before they were remanded in custody.
Bartosz Jacek Goldzinski, 26, and Weronika Jakubowska, 18, arrived on a flight from Charles De Gaulle airport in Paris on Monday carrying almost a kilogram of heroin, Police Inspector Jesmond Borg told the court. Mr Goldzinski was carrying 92 capsules of the drug in his stomach and his girlfriend had one package in her vagina.
As the couple sat in the dock waiting for their legal aid lawyer they kissed, hugged and caressed each other. They sat hand in hand throughout the hearing.
Mr Goldzinski could be heard telling the lawyer that although he carried the drugs they did not belong to him. Moments later he exclaimed: “Twelve years?” when his lawyer informally explained to him what sort of punishment he faced.
The couple denied conspiring to import, trafficking and being in possession of the drugs in a quantity that clearly was not for their exclusive use.
Magistrate Edwina Grima remanded them in custody.
