A 34-year-old man from Sliema, who had absconded from Malta last year while undergoing criminal proceedings for drug trafficking, was yesterday brought back to the island from Holland by the police.

The police said the suspect was arrested in The Netherlands after he was found in possession of a false foreign identity document.

His arrest and return to Malta followed coordination by the drug squad within the Malta Police Force, the International Relations Division of the Malta Police, Europol and the Attorney General’s office.

The police did not name the man, who had escaped from Malta in September last year after being accused of association to deal in drugs and possession of six kilograms of cannabis resin not for his personal use. The crime had allegedly occurred on October 12, 2008. At the time he was out on bail.

The man was escorted back by two Malta police officers and on a court order was taken to Corradino prison.
